Time for a Blast to the Past
Put on your nostalgia goggles, this minty-fresh gum is taking us back! Originally developed by Charles Burke who experimented with different flavours of his gum from his basement, the patent was then bought by the D.L. Clark Company.
Clark's Teaberry surged in popularity after an ad campaign in the 1960s. Using the tune "The Mexican Shuffle" from Tijuana Brass, Clark got Herb Alpert to rerecord it as "The Teaberry Shuffle". The commercials it was featured in showed uptight folk who would then chew a bit of Teaberry gum, and begin breaking out in dance!
This gum gets its flavour (and name) from the Gaultheria procumbens, better known as the eastern teaberry. The taste is reminiscent of a milder wintergreen mint. And you probably thought you weren't going to learn anything today, huh?
